Benjamin E. Mays Academy History, Mission and Vision
History
Mays Academy is located on Chicago's Southside, in a close-knit community,
known as New City, Englewood.
The Academy, originally opened as a branch of the Fulton school and is now located at 838 W. Marquette Road.
Mays Academy is actively involved in the Chicago Reading Initiative, two hours daily are devoted
to reading instruction for students of all grade levels. Including,
phonemic awareness, fluency, vocabulary and word attack skills.
Mays Academy is also involved in the Capital Improvement Program, this will
allow a move to a new school facility, over the summer of 2002. This
move will increase our number of available classrooms by 10. The additional
classroom space will allow for a computer lab, a library, a pre-kindergarten
classroom, a science lab, two full day kindergarten classrooms, and
a few art classrooms.
The Academy's instructional programs emphasize the retrieval of lost learning skills, as well as, providing an enriched
learning environment for the gifted student. Our centralized curriculum
allows for the coordinating of faculty, support staff and learning resources
to enhance the student's learning experience in every area of study
and for all grade levels. At Benjamin E. Mays Academy, we seek the active
participation and interfacing of our students, parents and community
within the framework of our school's learning programs.
Mission Statement
Benjamin E. Mays Academy provides positive, nurturing support to enable students to
gain confidence in their abilities to make good choices, as they build a solid foundation
in the basic skills of Reading, Mathematics, Critical Thinking, Writing, and using computers.
Our mission is to provide an orderly, safe place where teachers can teach and children
can learn. We will enforce in children a “CAN DO” spirit, high self-esteem, and a genuine
desire to learn, which they can utilize during their school years, and throughout the years
of their adult lives.
Vision Statement
We believe that the education of children is a shared responsibility, and that it takes the
resources of an entire community to teach children to succeed not only in school, but
also in life.
Our vision pictures parents and the larger community, joining forces with Benjamin E.
Mays Academy to provide additional support for school policies and to facilitate the
positive achievement of school goals.
Our vision sees parents who are responsible for assuring that children are prepared to
take advantage of the opportunities that are provided in the total school program.
We see children who experience academic excellence by engaging in and completing
planned, learning activities that are interesting, stimulating, challenging, and developmentally
appropriate.
Moreover, our vision embraces an instructional staff that maintains a high level of
expectation for children’s academic achievement by utilizing teaching strategies and
methodologies that work to produce students who are not only active learners, but who will also,
remain actively involved in the educational process throughout their
entire lives. To have every Benjamin E. Mays Academy student "Soar
Like an Eagle".
