Mays Academy is a small school, located in Chicago’s Englewood Community. The Mays Academy (BEMA) services students from grades Kindergarten through 5th grade. The Excel Preparatory Institute is a Smaller Learning Community (SLC) housed within the Mays Academy that provides single-gender (all male and all female) instruction for students grades 6th through 8th.

We are a Year Round Academy, operating on Track E; and we provide our students with a rigorous and focused curriculum. Our scores have steadily climbed over the last three years, and we fully expect to continue to experience academic success! Five years ago, our school was only at 18.6% meeting and/or exceeding state standards. Our staff worked feverously to raise the achievement. In 2007, we achieved 70.3% of our students meeting and/or exceeding the standards on the ISAT!

In addition to great academics, we offer numerous opportunities for our students to perform their other talents. We offer SES After School Programs, the All Stars Program, Knowledge Learning Corporation After Care Program (Tuition-based Before and After Care Program), Golf, Flag Football, Cheerleading and Pom Pom, Volleyball, Track and Field, Girl’s Fast Pitch Softball, and an Award Winning Basketball Program!

Our school is led by a School Leadership Team, which is anchored by the Principal and Assistant Principal. The organization is broken up into three Academic Houses: Primary, Intermediate and Upper (Excel). Teacher leaders are responsible for scheduling meetings, collaborating on lesson plans and assessments, and scheduling enriching field trips. Our staff has a family atmosphere, which carries over into our instructional practices. Mays Academy and Excel Prep provides a safe, nurturing environment where children can focus on learning, and grow both socially and emotionally. There is a Zero-Tolerance policy for all behavioral issues; and an expectation for excellence among all students, faculty, staff, and parents.
